En route across the Channel, the trunk containing his unfinished masterpiece, Les Misérables, is lost overboard! But fate deals Hugo a strange blow as he begins to recreate the book with the help of the very people he was destined to immortalize, and he discovers what really happened the night the barricades fell, twenty years before--and all that followed afterwards.
