Publisher's Synopsis
In January 1944, after a year's service in Egypt, Alice Glass returns to a home posting on the south coast of England. She seeks out her beloved Beth, who is now living in London, married to Arty Clark and mother of a six-month-old baby. In spite of Elsbeth's former renunciation, the girls discover their feelings for each other are as deep as ever. Davy Brown, now a policeman in York, is still in love with Alice, though he is shocked by what he must condemn as her unnatural inclinations. Against the unfolding of preparations for the greatest maritime invasion in history, the private lives of Alice, Davy, and Elsbeth move towards their own dramatic and tragic conclusions.
