In presenting this volume to the public, I am well aware that I am daring considerable, especially in expressing so boldly my views on religion. As regards my atheism, I will merely say that I have never read, until recently, the writ ings of any one on the subject; that I have regarded Nature as the one creative power of The Universe, and disbelieved the doctrine of the immortality of the soul ever since I can remember; that, on all such important matters, I form my opinions intuitively; that, if my book is to be condemned because the ideas advanced in one of the poems are at vari ance with those of the majority of the civilized world, then let it be condemned.
