Publisher's Synopsis
Loring, a young man being raised by an alien race on a terraformed planet, longs to know of his ancestry. He and a small group of humans have been told they are the sole survivors of the extinction suffered by the rest of their race and their home world. The opposing combatants in the interplanetary war arrive to their planet. Loring involves himself in the fighting with apparently disastrous consequences. Is he a hero or a victim or a pawn in the war?
He learns of his family and seeks to know if any are still alive. The current war began after the planet Earth was contacted by an alien race whose culture is based on strict determinism and denial of free will. Loring discovers that he is part of a heroic human family that for three generations has played a key role fighting for humanity. Both cultures survive the war with each culture believing themselves the victor. Loring after meeting surviving family members is called upon to help solve the myatery about a newly discovered planet inhabited by humans. A young man on this mystery planet is called upon to overcome his fears and bravely stand alone.
