Publisher's Synopsis

The international symposium, ``Planning for Agroforestry'', was held at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington on April 24-27, 1989 and selected contributions from the symposium, are published in this book. The volume is published under the auspices of ISOMUL, the International Studygroup on Multiple use of land. ISOMUL was formed by a small group of scientists from various nations who have an interest in the field of rural land-use planning. It seeks to establish an exchange of information and experience by encouraging and guiding studies in land-use planning. A large variety of systems, known collectively as agroforestry, currently exist. In all cases these systems are integrated within the rural land uses and especially within farming methods. Because agroforestry techniques require a relatively long time to implement fully, careful planning is required. Development agencies and research organizations have designed planning methods for implementing these techniques. A review of these planning methods in current use and under consideration was needed. The editors of this book therefore took the initiative to start such an overview.
