The roller coaster of opinions - "worthless, absolutely unplayable" (claims Nikolaj Rubinstein, basically Tchaikovsky's desired pianist for his Concerto in B flat minor); "brilliant", "magnificent" (Hans von Bülow, then first performer and dedicatee of the work) - demonstrates the work's initially ambivalent reception.
