Quyển sách này xin được viết cho những người cùng quan tâm đến lịch sử nước Việt biết thêm về một khía cạnh tín ngưỡng, văn học và mỹ thuật trong đời sống người Việt theo dòng lịch sử. Ngày nay dẫu theo văn-minh học-thuật phương Tây, chúng ta cũng không quên nguồn-gốc cũ. Tuy đạo Nho đã có thời kỳ thịnh phát trong bảy thế kỷ từ nhà Trần đến nhà Nguyễn, đạo Phật với lý thuyết sâu sắc, thâm trầm đã luôn luôn thăng trầm cùng với lịch sử nước Việt. Đạo Phật, cùng với đạo Nho và đạo Lão, mà người mình vẫn thường gọi là tam-giáo, đã tạo nên nhân sinh quan vững chắc cho người dân Việt. Buddhism arrived to the Viet peninsula more than 2000 years ago and has since become an integral part of Vietnamese history. This book is for readers interested in learning about a religion and a belief that has greatly influenced the life, literature, and arts of the Viet people. Although Confucianism has been dominant for seven centuries from the Trần dynasty to the Nguyễn dynasty, Buddhism with its profound spirituality has consistently thrived throughout the ups and downs of Vietnamese history.
