Publisher's Synopsis

This is an account of the three main areas of phonetics - articulatory, acoustic and auditory. The author examines the normative phonetic aspects, but discusses how these may go wrong and what happens when they do.;It is an introductory text for first year students following courses in speech pathology and therapy and is intended to compliment courses that will explore more fully those areas of communicative disorders touched upon while discussing phonetics. The text aims to link theoretical aspects with speech problems of various types. It covers various aspects of hearing, hearing impairment and audiological measurement. Throughout the book the main symbols of the IPA are introduced, together with symbols for disordered speech. Less usual techniques such as aerometry, palatography and spectrography are also considered.
