If the anthology principle be granted, there still remains the matter of selection. Here, the editors can only point to the table of contents and ask the reader to judge for himself. But the editors would like to call attention to the fact that there is little abridgement of the items in this work. Sev eral of the pieces, such as the essays by Professor Parker and that by Pro fessor Simon, were written especially for this anthology. Professor Gil son's essay on realism has here been given its first English translation. The other selections are either entire articles appearing in journals or else they form integral units in the books in which they appear. The editors thus feel that they have avoided the pitfall of the snippet type of anthology.
