Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Philosophy and Development of Religion, Vol. 2 of 2: Being the Gifford Lectures Delivered Before the University of Edinburgh, 1894
The subject of the second half of these lectures is to be the history of the Origin and Development of Chris tianity. The scientific investigation of this history is still of recent date, hardly more than a hundred years old. What made it impossible sooner was a double hindrance: first, a false idea of the nature of the Rev elation upon which Christianity rests; and secondly, a false idea of the character of the Sources from which we are able to obtain a knowledge of its origin.
