Publisher's Synopsis
This volume focuses primarily on potential interventions by pharmaceuticals, nutrients or chemicals in age-related disorders. Various experiments using deprenyl, melatonin, phenyl t-butyl nitrone, acidic fibroblast growth factor; and other compounds are reviewed, bringing these still controversial treatments to the attention of a wide variety of researchers. To develop new strategies for dealing with ageing there is extensive discussion of the mechanisms underlying the ageing process. This volume is of interest not only to basic scientists working in different fields of experimental gerontology, but also to clinicians who want to know what can be done to extend the functional life span of humans and animals by preventing the incidence and severity of age-related disorders.
