Publisher's Synopsis

Periodontal disease is an infection that occurs along the protective periodontium and/or insertion, due to the accumulation of biofilm that adheres to the tooth surface. In addition, various genetic, environmental and socio-economic factors aggravate the disease. The inflammatory process is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease, where it starts with bacterial pathogens that enter the bloodstream until they reach the endothelium, initiating a series of problems such as endothelial dysfunction and ultimately atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial, slowly progressive disease that generally consists of obstruction of the coronary arteries. The aim of this study was to review the literature on periodontal disease and its interrelationship with cardiovascular disease, associating its aetiology and risk factors.
