Publisher's Synopsis

This report presents the findings from the social capital section of the General Household Survey 2000/01. This research was commissioned by the Health Development Agency to increase understanding of the social environment in which people live and the links to the health of the British population. The report looks at: the distribution of social capital indicators; the variation with respect to socio-demographic and geographic factors; and the interrelationship between different indicators. Data is presented on concepts of civic engagement, neighbourliness, social networks and support; and perceptions of the local area.
