Publisher's Synopsis

This book studies the role of Pentecostal religious groups with migrants in a peripheral region of the city of São Carlos in the interior of São Paulo. We take as focus of study two churches located in the peripheral region of this city, specifically in the neighborhood called Cidade Aracy. We present the different phases of development, formation and constitution of the neighborhood under study with the configurations assumed by the space in its process of growth, development and constitution of periphery. We use the concept of urban periphery linked to the conditions of segregation highlighting the migratory component of the residents of the region under study. Finally, we analyze the characteristics of Pentecostal groups, paying special attention to the role they play in the reception and adaptation of migrants from other regions of the country and the state. Our theme is situated in the larger context of the urban world as a fundamental characteristic of modernity with its reconfigurations of religious forms. Our theoretical field combines the sociology of religion and urban sociology. The research included intensive field observation and the mapping of religious groups.
