Publisher's Synopsis
This anthology will attempt to correct the notion of the Cavalier period as a time of few major figures and many minor poets of clever, insincere and over-ingenious verse. Organized in two parts - the poems of peace and the poems of war - the anthology will do justice to the confusion and desolation which accompanied the Civil War and the overthrow of the monarchy.;The most concise comparison would be with the poets of World War I. As well as including the surviving works of many poets of real quality not usually included in anthologies of the period, this anthology will include inscriptions, anonymous poems and material from ballads and song books. At the same time the better known Cavalier poets will be represented by the most careful selection.
