Publisher's Synopsis
This book comprises a collection of papers given at the international colloquium "Le Parnasse: Preparations et Prolongements" held at Cambridge University in September 1988 under the presidency of Claude Pichois.;The contributions, 15 in French and five in English, are grouped in five sections: "Preparnasse"; "Coherence ideologique et esthetique de Parnasse; Correspondance musicales et plastiques"; "Du Parnasse au Symbolisme, continuite et ruptures"; "Le Parnasse international". Through examinations of the inter-relationship between poetry, thought and the non-literary arts, these essays demonstrate the pivotal role played by the Parnasse in the developmental shape of 19th century French poetic theory and practice. This realization is seen to aid a fuller understanding, not only of the roots of shared preoccupations but as the quest for musicality, the liberation of sensation from reason, and the primitivist evocation of Edenic dream-worlds.
