Born and raised on a farm in 1711, Patrick was orphaned at the age of ten, when both his father and mother died within days of each other. Since his father's brother, Robert, wanted nothing to do with the boy, he sent his young nephew out alone, on a one-way ticket aboard a cargo ship to sail from Wexford, Ireland to Boston in the Massachusetts Bay.
