Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Pasadena Kindergartens, 1901-1919
This is not the proper place to suggest the things the kinder garten should teach, even were that possible, - but I wish to call attention to two or three of the many qualities which should go into all teaching, especially of young children. The teacher and the school must, first of all, teach pure truth with a joyous and single-minded purpose and enthusiasm. Every spiritual spark, every intellectual fire, every gleam of moral purpose, must be seized upon for the individual and the social good. The noisy life of the impulsive animal must be rhythmically attuned to the unfolding personality, as nature speaks through sea and forest. The heart and core of the kindergarten must be intense social sympathy, but the child must develop rapidly and naturally an individual con science and judgment. The child does not need a definition of truth, he should become an embodiment of that virtue. I do not speak of truth in any narrow sense, but in its broad universality, its all-compelling and all-comprehending power to make alive.
