De Vargas Mexia, qui avait �t� pendant plusieurs ann�es ambassadeur du Roi d'espagne aupr�s du Duc de Savoie, et qui s'�tait acquitt� de cette charge avec distinction fut choisi par Philippe II, au mois d'octobre 1577, pour remplacer don Diego de' Zuniga comme ambassadeur r�sidant en France.
