Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 7
The new 68-pounder and 84-pounder guns seem not to be generally suited to coast defences, because they cannot be fired over a 6-foot parapet in consequence of the difficulty of lifting such heavy shot, and because hollow shot cannot be fired red hot, their diameter being altered by that Operation; but when this ordnance can be advantageously placed upon a height to be fired en barbette, it has now become necessary to use it, in order to Oope with the present naval armament.
