Publisher's Synopsis

Over the last two decades, the Pacific Rim region has gained increased recognition as an economic and political entity. The term "Pacific Rim" is open to various interpretations, but in this book the definition is based on geographical and attitudinal (e.g. trade) arguments as including all countries and areas that border or are located within the Pacific Ocean. Thus all of East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, as well as Australia and New Zealand and the western coast of the Americas are included. Within this region the tourism industry is rapidly expanding. This book has been developed from papers presented at a conference held in Rotorua, New Zealand, in November 1996. Six themes are addressed: tourism trends; cultural and social issues; ecotourism and sustainable development; Pacific islands; economic and planning issues; and the future. Written by authors from Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Fiji, Malaysia, New Zealand and the USA, the book represents an important volume for advanced students, research workers and practitioners in tourism and economic development.
