Publisher's Synopsis
Duccio di Buoninsegna was probably born between 1255 and 1260. The first mention of him is a record of payment for painting some of the wooden tablets, which covered the account books of the revenue office of the Commune of Siena. It seems likely that between the end of the 1270's and 1280's, Duccio was part of Cimabue's following at the Upper Church of San Francesco at Assisi, and there are great similarities between the works of these painters. Duccio examines the work and influences of this painter, including The Maesta, which is reproduced in full colour, with an extensive commentary.
