Publisher's Synopsis
Over the Line records the first 20 years of a not-for-profit organization seeking to protect and enhance the Wolf Lake watershed in Southeast Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
That organization, the Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative (AWLI), was established in 1999 to serve as the lead organization for the $8.9 million implementation of a shoreline restoration project. Later, AWLI went on to become the lead organization for the $2.9 million cleanup of Calumet Container brownfield, completed in 2006.
Section I of the book focuses on the history of the watershed, including a chapter filled with memories by neighbors.
Section II describes efforts to pursue the mission of protecting and enhancing the watershed, including the year-long effort to write the vision document.
Section III records efforts to sustain the organization, including a chapter in which assessments are made of the organization.
Appendices include a self-guided tour of the watershed, articles on special places in the watershed, local flora and fauna, the Wolf Lake Vision Document, a bibliography, and AWLI's flow chart.
