Publisher's Synopsis
Even decades after the Russian occupation, the power struggle between the various Mujahidin factions and the rule of the Taliban, Afghanistan is not at peace. On the contrary, the number of people turning their backs on their troubled home country has risen dramatically during the time of the so-called democracy. While the individual motives might vary from person to person and family to family, there is something they have in common: they all have given up the hope that things might change for the better in the foreseeable future. Too many chances have been wasted. Thus, the story of Sabur and his family mirrors the fates of all those who, like them, set out for Europe hoping for a brighter future. Uncertainty, difficulties in communication and cultural problems, but also many bright spots mark their first time in Germany. Since "Out of Afghanistan" is based largely on actual experience -including the author's- it can be regarded, in some way, as a true account in spite of its fictitious characters.
