IT seems to me that the foolishest thing free-traders can now do is to fall to quarreling with each other about how much free trade they want. For my part I want all the free trade I can get. I am not afraid of too much. The case is such that any and all who want tariff reform can join and push on with all the strength they can muster. They will not get any more than the most timid one wants, until he has had full time to re?ect, and to withdraw if he wants to. If any one will join I do not see the propriety of warning him not to fight too hard, or not to believe in the cause too much. The methods of a popular agita tion are not those of an academical discussion. The allies who can be most profitably dispensed with, in a popular discussion, are those who only get in the way.
