The word orangutan is derived from two others - the Malay and Indonesian words for "person" and the word for forest. Thus an orangutan is a "person of the forest."
Until very recently, there were only six extant species of great ape: Sumatran and Bornean orangutans native to Indonesia and Malaysia, eastern and western gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. But now a new species, the Tapanuli Orangutan, has been discovered in Indonesia, but in such small numbers (800) that it is already considered even more critically endangered than the other two orangutan species. Orangutans are more arboreal than the other great apes, and have reddish hair. The primary threats to highly intelligent animals is habitat destruction due to deforestation for monocrop industrial farming (palm oil, etc.) and logging, poaching, and illegal pet trade.
