Bookseller Notes
Kneppelhout takes advantage of the appearance of this volume to resume his correspondence with Henry Bright, the artist, friend of Turner, &c. From the letter we gather that Kneppelhout had selected out of his Geschriften, then in the course of publication, his French writings and had them privately printed in a small number of copies. The cancellans for 16/5 ends half way down p. 249, and the verso is blank. The cancellandum has text filling both recto and verso. The part cancelled is politically sensitive, addressing as it does the question of whether a government is better to rely on aristocracy or the people: the former are preferred, as having a better grasp of the national interest. The Opuscules are best described as belles lettres, but there is a little literary criticism as well, including 'En sortant de voir Matre Favilla, comdie de Mad. Sand', an early performance, with the piece dated 1856 (in the text we are introduced to Georges [sic] Sand). Various contemporary poets are alluded to.
