Publisher's Synopsis
This study anticipates the start of a new chapter in drug development for schizophrenia.;The mental hopsital system in the UK has been drastically reduced due in part to the efficacy of neuroleptic drugs. This efficacy has severe limitations, and there is a constant search for new compounds which will prove effective for hitherto treatment-resistant cases, be more acceptable to patients, and have fewer side-effects.;Each contributor to this volume comes from a different discipline or has a different role in the provision of care, and it is made clear that the overall effectiveness of any service depends to a large extent on the degree to which these people collaborate and interact in positive ways.;On the whole, medical and social services do not provide the support and help which are needed by non-professional carers. How this situation can be improved is also one of the main themes of the book.
