The functions of computer vision entail applying algorithms to still or moving images to automatically extract meaningful, reproducible data. That process might include finding or recognizing all or parts of objects, tracking the movement of objects in 2-D or 3-D between successive images, determining the 2-D or 3-D shape of objects from one or more images, and associating image data with a categorical meaning, such as mapping a handwave to the category "good-bye." The Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) is an open-source, free for research and commercial use, computer vision library that is maintained by Intel and assembly language optimized across Intel's processor line. The book begins with an overview of the contents of the library, followed by a detailed tutorial on the use of OpenCV algorithms: Kalman Filter, HMM, and Optical Flow. It then demonstrates various interfaces to OpenCV, including COM objects/DirectX, a C scripting environment, and Matlab.
