Publisher's Synopsis
Traditionally, many linguists have viewed phonetics (the study of speech processes) as having only marginal bearing on the study of language, including phonology (the study of sound systems). In recent years, however, a growing number of investigators have begun to advocate a greater integration of the disciplines of phonetics and phonology, in some cases arguing that phonetic theory may provide an explanatory basis for significant phonological regularities. This special issue of "Phonetica" examines the phonetics/phonology relation from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives.
