Publisher's Synopsis
On The Plains Of Mayo details the results of archaeological monitoring, testing and excavation along the route of the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme Stage III in south-east County Mayo in Ireland. This 80km pipeline line cut across the plains of south-east Mayo resulted to the discovery of 25 previously unknown archaeological sites allowing an insight into elements of the lives of our ancestors between two and four thousand years ago. The book describes in detail the sites and artefacts found along the route of the pipeline. Details are presented of the microscopic analysis of plant remains from many of the excavated fulachta fiadh and burnt mounds which together with the remains of charcoal help to illustrate the nature of the prehistoric landscape of south-east Mayo.
