Publisher's Synopsis

On My Own presents the recollections of 102-year-old Daisy Turner, a remarkable African-American woman whose family settled in Grafton, Vermont after the Civil War. Her strong voice holds the viewer and belies her years. In the documentary, she vividly recounts stories told to her by her father about Civil War battles and soldiers, and his journey to freedom in the North. She also recalls her own experiences as one of thirteen children growing up in the late 19th and early 20th century in a rural Yankee community, and her family's efforts to overcome discrimination. Her stories, poems, and recitations weave a spellbinding narrative of courage and fortitude.
