Publisher's Synopsis
This is a collection of the author's essays, written over a 30-year period, which focus on various contemporary issues that are a part of modern Indian society but nevertheless elude comprehension. The first six essays are devoted to an understanding of the growth of modern India. The seventh essay deals with the social significance of religion in India today. The problems that a sociologist faces in the study of his own society have been a running preoccupation with the author, and one chapter contains his latest reflections on the theme.
