After-images were first described in the De Somm'a's by Aristotle, who regarded them as closely allied to the centrally excited images of-the dre'am-state they were rediscovered and described anew by St. Augustine, and again by the Arab AI h-azan (a student of Aristotle's works) in the eleventh century. Peiresc, in describing these appearances in the seventeenth century, thought that he had discovered a new phenomenon.
