Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Old Shrines and Ivy
Most of the essays on the plays were writ ten ai the suggestion of my old friend Augustin Daly, and were privately printed, by way of introduction to stage-versions of those plays, edited by him. A thread of theatrical history therefore appears in those essays, entwined with disquisition on the beauties of some of the most cherished treas ures of our language. The paper commem orative of Longfellow was written in the New York Tribune at the time of his death.
