Publisher's Synopsis

Old Fortunatus is a play written by Thomas Dekker in 1600. The play is set in Europe and tells the story of Fortunatus, a man who is granted a magical purse by the goddess Fortune. The purse is never empty and provides Fortunatus with endless wealth and power. However, his greed and lust for more leads him down a path of destruction, and he loses everything he has gained. Along the way, he encounters a variety of characters, including a group of thieves, a wealthy merchant, and a beautiful woman named Bellafront. The play explores themes of greed, power, and the consequences of one's actions. It is a classic example of Elizabethan drama and is still performed today. This edition of the play was published in 1904 and includes an introduction by the editor, W. W. Greg. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
