Above all, it has been my endeavour to avoid the language of theory and vague hypothesis, which (to use the words of that ingenious writer Mr. Samuel Sharp) have never done any con siderable service to the practice of surgery; nay, for the most part have misled young surgeons from the study of the symptoms and cure of diseases to an idle turn of reasoning and a certain style in con versation, which has very much discredited the art amongst men of sense.
