This work presents basic energy requirements for a variety of training and performance conditions and then discusses how nutrition can be used to optimize the training response. In discussing training, nutritional links are made with each aspect of training, the adaptation cycle and competition.;In each of these training aspects, nutrition and diet is presented as a natural ergogenic aid by not only considering macro- and micro-nutritional requirements, but also discussing functional foods that have an association with health and performance. A discussion of optimizing intake of nutrients is presented that goes beyond the need to avoid nutritional deficiency.;Special aspects of ageing and growth and development are addressed, and results of scientific studies are presented and the data is adapted for practical used. This evidence is also discussed and supported or refuted with scientific knowledge. A large section is devoted to examples of menu that can be used to enhance training and performance adaptation response.
