Adequate nutrition is a basic human need and a prerequisite for optimum health. Proper nutrition is of vital importance especially for vulnerable groups. Malnutrition is still one of the major public health problems in Egypt constituting one of the principal causes of morbidity and mortality among young children and women in the reproductive age period. Deficiencies of specific micronutrients, such as vitamin A, iron and iodine are wide spread and have significant health effects. The main underlying causes of malnutrition include inadequate access to food, inadequate care of mothers and children, inadequate health services and unhealthy environments.
