Umbrellas and parasols are very-rarely seen among Mexicans; their origin is distinctly Asiatic. When Mahomed entered Medina, at end of the Hegira, an umbrella shaded his head. (gibbon, Decl. But, on the other hand, that dangerous weapon, the Spanish fan, may be ascribed to the Romans, in whose religious ceremonials two fans, made of white peacock feathers, were borne before the Pontifex Maximus. They are said still to figure in some of the more elaborate functions of the Vatican.
