IT is with much hesitation I offer this volume of rough sketches to the public.
Many friends have so often suggested that I should put my Notes into some order, that at last I have endeavoured to do so. But although I inherit my father's love for natural history, his charm of writing, I fear, has not equally descended to me.
During my last seven years in the East, when surveying in Japan, I always had the win ter months fairly free from duty, and was then able to enjoy many a good ramble in quest of game, as well as to collect objects of nature.
