IN view of the fact that the majority of the colored race having served one part of the Union, as slaves, for the period of two hundred and forty-nve years, the benefit of which all sections of the country shared more or less, as a part of the nation's wealth; and were radically emancipated by the government as a war measure, accomplished speedily without consideration as to what would become of the emancipated race; and whereas this people, by the same authority, as it were an unexpected shower of blessings from heaven, are adopted and made part of the family of this great and noble nation, with all the constitutional rights, to assist in perpetuating the government, and from the testimonies herein given, it is therefore believed that every possible means tending towards their intellectual and moral improvement should be liberally given, the writer, in presenting this book to the public, is actuated by no greater motive than to make known the wants of this people to the friends of suffering humanity, and to report with such accuracy the opinions expressed by thousands of the most distinguished men of church and state, that this work may find a place in the chamber and parlor of mothers and children, as well as theing that this work will be conducted by competent adminis trators of our own, and therefore h0pe that every reader who wishes to encourage us in this movement will favor us with a donation according to their means and the blessings enjoyed.
