Excerpt from Notes Upon the Mound Structures of Southern Illinois and Ohio, in the Vicinity of St. Louis, Cincinnati and Newark: Read Before the Canadian Institute, Feb. 23, 1861 (as Reported for the Leader and Revised by the Author)
To illustrate the character of the works Mr. W. Had examined in Illinois, he would remark that a ruin now in course of demolition in the city of St. Louis, showed from a section of the work which the Opera tion of cutting it down had exposed, that the entire structure was composed of brick clay or loam.
It was about 200 feet square at the base, with an elevation of 60 feet, and consisted of two steps or terraces. There were no remains discovered by the workmen, showing for what purpose it had been originally constructed. It might be taken as a. Type of all the larger structures in that vicinity.
