The scattering of electrons by hydrogen atoms has long been used as a.model for the scattering of electrons by atomic systems, because it is amenable to some sort of approximate analysis and'because it exhibits many of the features of the latter problem, In order that the approximate analysis be useful in the more complicated systems, some basis must be found for evaluating the accuracy of the approximation techniques used in this elementary'problem, To that end.an extensive series of experiments, involving the elastic scattering of electrons by hydrogen atoms in the range between zero and the first excitation potential of the hydrogen atom has been undertaken by Professor Benjamdn Bederson and his collaborators at new'york University[l], and by Dr. Wade L. Fite at General atomics[2j.
