Publisher's Synopsis
This volume is directed at people suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and their representative bodies. Under names such as neurasthenia, effort syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), CFS has generated medical debate for more than a century. Currently, it remains a poorly understood and poorly publicized illness but, with this book, the publishers hope to illustrate to patients that the medical and research fields, at least, are taking their disorder very seriously indeed.;The contents summarize the discussions of a recent meeting organized and funded by the Linbury Trust and Novartis Foundation, which invited a diverse group of clinicians and scientists to think laterally about CFS - specifically, about how each of the common symptoms of CFS might be generated. This "symptom-led" approach, while unconventional, is recognized as increasingly useful in conditions such as CFS for which the cause remains unknown. The symptoms discussed and reported include: altered self-awareness, interrupted sleep, reduced concentration and reduced interest. Many new ideas for both treatment and research are generated.
