This collection of articles serves as an introduction to contemporary Polish literature, developed through critical discussion of key problems and representative writers. It includes poetry, fiction and drama. Some essays are devoted to individual writers including, Milosz, Herbert, Gombrowicz, Schulz, Konwicki,Andrzejewski, Mysliwski and Mrozek.;Others embrace broader problems, such as the attitude of leading poets towards politics, the use of documentation in fiction, the image of Poland in drama and fiction at the time of the social upheavals of 1977-1987, and the new poetry of the 1980s and early 1990s. The majority of the writers discussed are representative of post-1945 literature.
