Lung cancer is the commonest cause of death from cancer in the Western world and for a long time doctors have been pessimistic about its prognosis. Over the past three years, however, there have been important and exciting advances made in the understanding and treatment of lung cancer, and interest in the disease has grown considerably.;"Thorax" asked five experts to write about some of these advances and published the articles in 1991.
