Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from New England Revivals, as They Existed at the Close of the Eighteenth, and the Beginning of the Nineteenth Centuries: Compiled Principally From Narratives
The ministers, whom God employed as instruments in these revivals were, as a class, excellent men. Most of them, says Dr. Porter, I personally knew - many of them were my fathers ln the sacred o?ice, whom I regarded then, as I do now, with sin cere respect, and veneration. Many of them, were among the most intelligent, and able men of their time. They were generally men of deep and ardent piety, who had power with God, who loved the souls of men, and who were willing to spend, and be spent in the service of their Divine Master. They were sound in the faith, and shunned not to declare all the counsel of God. They were also men of great practical wisdom. They were not wanting in zeal; but theirs was not a blind, rash zeal which defeats its own object, but a zeal according 'to knowledge.
