This work takes a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of central nervous system injury. It addresses the role and responsibilities of all health professionals involved in these difficult cases. Issues range from practical matters of acute and long-term management to consideration of prevention, demographics of head injury, and the difficult decision of when to terminate treatment.;The third Houston Conference on Neurotrauma, from which this volume emanates, was designed to bring together experts from diverse backgrounds to discuss, criticize and improve the management of neurologically injured patients.;The purposes of these annual conferences are: to present new ideas and approaches to management of head and spinal trauma, to improve understanding of the roles of both acute care and rehabilitation personnel in care of these patients, and to address important ethical and socioeconomic issues related to these serious, debilitating injuries.
