To expound a doctrine explanatory of the nature, genesis, and causes of pain in general.
To exemplify the applicability of that doctrine as a means of explanation of the genesis and causes of neuralgia in particular.
To prove that neuralgia of that kind which is regarded as a special disease, and which has been distinctively designated immaterial, centripetal, and true, cannot be scientifically differentiated from other kinds of pain, and that it and all other kinds of pain are, in respect to the nature of their proximate cause, essentially identical.
To give a series of explanations of the nature of those morbid changes in the nervous system constituting the ground work and causes of all those collateral phenomena commonly called complications of neuralgia - explanations thoroughly accordant with each other, and with the doctrine just mentioned concerning the nature and causes of pain in general.
To show that the doctrines in question concerning pain in general, and neuralgia in particular, as well as the collateral phenomena of neuralgia, suggest a therapeutical principle, by the guidance of which the most successful method of counteracting each and all of those morbid states may be attained.
